Events

History joins with community in events which take place at Pleasant View. As winter gives way to spring each year, Pleasant View comes alive with activities that celebrate, restore and remember this vital resource, and educate the wider community regarding Pleasant View’s place in African American and, thus, American history.

  • Founders Day Celebration

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more.

  • Juneteenth

An official federal holiday and the Pleasant View Historical Association and partners will be planning special events for Juneteenth to mark the day and connect to its history.

  • Earth Day

A community day for weeding gardens, planting, and grooming the landscape around the church.

  • Memorial Day

Event which is when folk typically come to the site to decorate graves of their loved ones.

  • JuneFest

An annual community celebration of the Pleasant View site which coincides with Heritage Montgomery tours of historic sites. JuneFest was originally in May and was celebrated as a community event with a wrapping of the Maypole.

As the Pleasant View restoration proceeds, the Historical Association and its partners will be developing programming that places Pleasant View in the wider context of the African American experience post-Civil War and
during Reconstruction, the era of Jim Crow.

Among the events to be explored, will be a film festival held during Black History Month and ultimately shown at the Quince Orchard Colored School. Screening of the landmark prize-winning documentary, Finding Fellowship, which tells the story of the remarkable moment when the members of Pleasant View Methodist Episcopal Church, McDonald Chapel, and Hunting Hill became one congregation, will be a signature event when the film festival takes place. More information about “Finding Fellowship” and its creators maybe found in the Archives on this site.
